The Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, celebrated an outstanding sporting achievement at the Inter-Faculty Meet 2026, held on 12 July 2026 at the University of Ruhuna Ground in Wellamadama, Matara. The Faculty emerged as the Overall Champions following a remarkable display of determination, teamwork and athletic excellence. This victory reflects the Faculty’s unwavering commitment to fostering both academic and extracurricular excellence.
The annual Inter Faculty Meet brought together students from all faculties of the University of Ruhuna, providing a platform to showcase talent across a diverse range of sporting events. The Faculty of Engineering delivered a dominant performance throughout the competition, achieving the remarkable distinction of securing all three major titles, the Men’s Championship, Women’s Championship, and the Overall Championship. Engineering also claimed the Overall Championship with an impressive 50+ point lead over the runner up, highlighting the team’s consistency and superiority across the tournament.
This historic achievement was made possible through months of dedicated training and perseverance. Despite challenges such as limited sports facilities, equipment shortages, and balancing demanding academic schedules, Engineering students remained committed to their goals.
The collective efforts of the athletes, academic staff, alumni, and the Faculty Sports Council played a significant role in this outstanding success. The Faculty of Engineering extends its sincere gratitude to the Dean, Prof. Chaminda Karunasena, for his continuous encouragement and support in promoting sports excellence within the faculty. Special appreciation is also extended to the Sports Advisory Board Member of the faculty sports council, Dr. S.W. Senevirathne; the Senior Treasurer of the Ruhuna Engineering Faculty Sports Council, Dr. Chithral Ambawatta; and the Instructor in Physical Education, Ms. H.A.N.A.K. Attipola, for their invaluable guidance, dedication, and continuous support towards the development of sports activities and the achievements of our students.
Engineering athletes excelled in numerous events, earning championships and podium finishes across individual and team sports. The faculty’s achievements reflected not only sporting talent but also qualities of discipline, resilience, leadership, and unity that define the engineering community.
Beyond competition, the Inter Faculty Meet strengthened friendships and promoted a spirit of healthy rivalry among students. The event provided opportunities for leadership, teamwork, and personal development while fostering a vibrant sporting culture within the university.
The Faculty Sports Council extends its sincere appreciation to the Dean, academic staff, alumni, sponsors, and every student who contributed to this memorable journey. Their continuous encouragement and support were instrumental in achieving this milestone.
In recognition of this remarkable achievement, the Dean, Prof. Chaminda Karunasena, Heads and academic staff felicitated the champions and recognised their hard work, dedication and team spirit at a special felicitation session organised by the Faculty.
