Shunt active filter, non-linear loads, balanced system
Overview
Increased level of total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid current is becoming a problem in distribution grids with significant number of power electronic based systems. Distributed generation systems are connected to the grid via power electronic converters. Power electronic converters are one of the major sources of harmonics. Therefore, solutions are needed to overcome this issue. In this project, we propose a shunt active filter which can be used in distribution grids to reduce the THD level in the grid current. The system consists of a voltage source inverter (VSI) with DC link capacitor, and the DC link is powered by an energy storage unit as shown in Figure 1. Battery bank is proposed for the energy storage unit. The load shown in the figure is a non-linear load or a distributed generator connected to the utility grid via a power electronic converter. Therefore, the load current (Iload) is non-sinusoidal. Without the active filter, the grid current (Igrid) is also non-sinusoidal as grid current equals the load current. The filter current (Icomp) is controlled such that it injects a compensation current to the utility grid to shape the grid current to be sinusoidal.
