The Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, is proud to announce that our undergraduate projects,
- “iHeart: Multi-modal Cardiac Monitor for Emerging AI Health Applications” – 1st Place
- “Thoraxis: Interpretable abnormality classification in volumetric chest CT using Dictionary Learning” – 2nd Place
secured 1st Place and the the 2nd Place at the Undergraduate Inventor of the Year (UIY) 2026, organized by The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL).
About the Innovation – iHeart
iHeart is a portable, AI-driven, multi-modal cardiac monitoring system that integrate
s five sensing technologies: ECG, PCG, SCG, PPG, and Continuous-Wave Doppler Ultrasound. By incorporating AI-based anomaly detection, iHeart aims to support more comprehensive, accessible, and intelligent cardiac monitoring.

This achievement adds to the team’s growing list of national-level recognitions in 2026:
- 2nd Place – National AI Awards 2026, Innovation & Future Focus Category – University AI Innovation Award.

- 1st Place – IEEE FYP Arena 2026, Biomedical Engineering & Emerging Technologies Track.
- 1st Place – IESL Undergraduate Inventor of the Year (UIY) 2026.
About the innovation – Thoraxis:
In high-stakes fields like medicine, interpretability matters more than raw accuracy. Deep Learning models are black boxes, that give a prediction but can’t explain why. Thoraxis uses Dictionary Learning, where every diagnosis maps back to specific regions of a CT scan, so biomedical researchers can see exactly which
underlying structure drove the decision.
