The Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, in collaboration with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) and the Ministry of Education, successfully conducted the TRCSL–UoR ICT Boot Camp 2025 from 11 to 22 August 2025.
This two-week intensive programme was part of the TRCSL ICT Volunteer Programme 2025, a national initiative aimed at strengthening ICT education in rural schools across Sri Lanka. The Faculty contributed by deploying 50 undergraduate student volunteers from the 25th batch, providing resource personnel, laboratory facilities, and accommodation support. The programme was coordinated with strong support from academic staff and student volunteers of the Rextro External Relations Committee, aligning with the Faculty’s 25th anniversary celebrations.
Participants engaged in sessions covering both technical and professional development topics, including ICT literacy, teaching methodologies, mentoring skills, cybersecurity, applied Python, hardware troubleshooting, artificial intelligence, data visualization, networking, cloud and IoT fundamentals, web application development, computer vision, and sustainable innovation. Discussions also emphasized responsible digital citizenship, volunteer teaching, and preparing for the future world of work.
The boot camp benefitted from the expertise of leading industry professionals, academic staff, and experienced school teachers who served as resource persons.
As a result of this initiative, 50 student volunteers are now actively serving in 50 schools across Sri Lanka, contributing to ICT education and helping bridge the digital divide. They also serve as ambassadors of the Faculty of Engineering during this landmark Silver Jubilee year.
