Undergraduate Programs

Out of the four departments at the Faculty of Engineering, which was established in July, 1999 at Galle, the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies is the Department, which cater for the managerial skill development while supporting the major streams by providing the necessary background knowledge in Mathematical areas.

The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies (DIS) designed its curriculum to bridge the gap between the students’ technical skills and personal development. To achieve this, the department is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and providing the necessary background knowledge in mathematical areas to support the major engineering streams. The main aim of the DIS is to train the undergraduate students’ interaction with the environment. This helps the students to asses the impact of engineering activity on the environment, and thus take steps to mitigate any adverse effect. They are expected to continue self education while effectively communicating with other members of the profession and the public. The DIS offers modules in common areas of all engineering disciplines which include management, economics, social science, personal development, aesthetics and mathematics.

The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies offers course modules in areas such as Mathematics, Personal Development, Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics, Finance, Management, and Entrepreneurship, which are considered common to all disciplines.

In addition to the curriculum, the department supports students to improve their English Language knowledge and skills by offering the module “Proficiency in English”.

Proficiency in English Test may include UTEL (University Test of English Language) or any other equivalent examination conducted by the Faculty of Engineering, to evaluate the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills with a pass mark equivalent to the International English Language Testing System IELTS 5.0 (academic test) or equivalent. As an encouragement for students to test their English language skills with the internationally renowned testing platform for English the language, those students with scores above IELTS 5.0 (academic test) for all components of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, or equivalent grade of any other renown Equivalent English Language test qualification, e.g. TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language), upon the independent recording of results, may apply for exemptions for English proficiency test conducted by the Faculty of Engineering.

Completion of the English Language Proficiency Test is one of the graduation requirements to be admitted to the degree of the Bachelor of the Science of Engineering Honours (BSc Eng. Hons) prescribed by the Faculty Board with the approval of the Senate (refer to Student Hand Book: Graduation Requirements).
