Welcome to the web page of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna. The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies is currently one of the five departments of the Faculty of Engineering and is located in the Hapugala area of Galle, the beautiful coastal city of the southern province. The department was established in the faculty in the year 1999.
The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies (DIS) has mainly designed its curriculum to bridge the gap between the student’s technical skills and personal development. Accordingly, the department caters to managerial skill development while supporting the major streams by providing the necessary background knowledge in Mathematical areas.
The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies offers courses for all students regardless of the discipline. It facilitates all other departments by providing the basic skills required to follow their degree programs. Further, the department provides opportunities to enhance their knowledge in mathematics, management, economics, social science, and personal development. There, one of the aims of the department is to train undergraduate students in interaction with the environment. This helps the students to assess the impact of engineering activity on the environment, and thus take steps to mitigate any adverse effects. They are expected to continue self-education while effectively communicating with other members of the profession and the public.
The department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. With these opportunities and facilities provided students are expected to expand their skills in multi-disciplinary areas which are very important to graduate, not just as an engineer but as an engineer who can very well understand the needs of our society.
The department staff and I believe you all are very fortunate to have these kinds of multidisciplinary courses and sophisticated facilities in your learning environment and expect to get the maximum benefit from that. We wish you all the courage to become a competent engineer for the country.
