Vidura Bandara Wijekoon, a final year undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, won the IET Young Professionals’ Technical Conference 2023. His paper, “Critical Assessment of Machine Learning-Based Approaches for Predicting System Inertia in Power Systems” earned him the Best Technical Paper award. This paper evaluates different machine learning strategies used for estimating system inertia in power grids, a task becoming more significant due to the rise of renewable energy and its impact on grid stability. It aims to inform readers about the current research status, shortcomings of existing models, and possible future enhancements to improve accuracy and their application in real-world power systems. Congratulations Vidura, on this well-deserved recognition!. His success not only brings pride to the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna but also reinforces the importance of cutting-edge research in shaping the future of power systems.
