Overview of Faculty Quality Assurance Cell


The Faculty of Engineering Quality Assurance Cell (FQAC) of the University of Ruhuna is committed to ensuring and enhancing the quality of the undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the Faculty of Engineering. Currently, the Faculty of Engineering conducts five undergraduate degree programs. All undergraduate degree programs are accredited by IESL (Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka) in accordance with the Washington Accord.


The Chairperson of the FQAC is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor for three years. The Chairperson works on a part-time basis and reports to the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Director of the Centre for Quality Assurance (CQA), University of Ruhuna. The Chairperson is a member of the Senate Standing Committee of Quality Assurance which meets every second working Tuesday of a month, where the Chairperson reports faculty level QA activities to the SSQA which in turn reports to the Senate.


The Faculty Quality Assurance Cell is chaired by the Chairperson and consists of thirteen Quality Assurance Coordinators representing all the departments, Coordinator, Engineering Education Centre; Deputy Senior Student Counselor; Member, By-Law and Curriculum Revision Committee; and Senior Assistant Librarian. The Assistant Registrar of the Faculty serves as the secretary to the cell. The QA Committee meeting is scheduled to take place on the second week Tuesday of every month and is a regular meeting in the Faculty calendar. The agenda for the meeting covers the full spectrum of quality assurance activities of the Faculty. The QA Committee serves as a medium to share best practices in the different departments and provides a critical review of the effectiveness of existing QA procedures and makes necessary improvements.

Mission of the CQA


To ensure continuous quality improvements and achieve standards of academic excellence through quality assurance mechanisms. CQA, in collaboration with Faculty Quality Assurance Cells established at faculties, library and other entities of the University is committed to achieving following goals;


     • Ensuring the expansion of the access to education meets the needs of the country and aligns with national educational policy frameworks.
     • Ensuring continuous improvement in quality of education, research and service experience of students.
     • Ensuring justice, transparency and equity in QA functions and processes.
     • Contributing towards Good Governance.
     • Inculcating the culture of quality enhancement among students and all categories of staff.

Programme Review 2022


The programme review of the three degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna was completed with all three engineering programmes receiving a high level of accomplishment of quality with high “A” grades.

“Ruhuna Debaters” bring home the championship again with the topic “පාර්ලිමේන්තුව විසුරුවා හැර මහාමැතිවරණයකට යාමෙන් මෙරට දේශපාලන හා ආර්ථික ස්ථාවරභාවය ඇති කළ හැකිය / දේශපාලන හා ආර්ථික අස්ථාවරත්වය තවදුරටත් වැඩිවේ.”


“Ruhuna Debaters”, the University of Ruhuna Sinhala Debate team was able to bring home the championship this December when they beat the University of Jaffna C team at the debate “A new Dawn” inter-university debating competition. The debate was organized by the Department of Sociology & Cultural Center of University of Ruhuna. The preliminary rounds were won against Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, University of Jaffna and University of Kelaniya. Topic for the final debate was “පාර්ලිමේන්තුව විසුරුවා හැර මහාමැතිවරණයකට යාමෙන් මෙරට දේශපාලන හා ආර්ථික ස්ථාවරභාවය ඇති කළ හැකිය / දේශපාලන හා ආර්ථික අස්ථාවරත්වය තවදුරටත් වැඩිවේ.” The team was captained by H. H.Avishka Udara from the Faculty of Management and the other team members were: Chamidu Adithya (Faculty of Engineering), Shamith Jayawardhana (Faculty of Humanities and Social Science) and Danidu Demantha (selected to Faculty of Engineering).


Signing of MOU with Sri Lanka Unites (SLU)


An MoU was signed between University of Ruhuna and Sri Lanka Unites (SLU). This MoU envisions to promote Education on Reconciliation and Leadership to the students of the University for the next five years.

Honorary Invitation Offer for Chaminda Karunasena - Adjunct Professor of QUT


Congratulations to Prof. Chaminda Karunasena, for being appointed as an Honorary Adjunct Professor of QUT in the Faculty of Engineering, School of Mechanical, Medical & Process Engineering for a 2-year period. This award is in recognition of his excellent research and innovation towards the betterment of Science.

Hope this appointment will become a bridging path for international research between Queensland University of Technology and University of Ruhuna.


Congratulations for being promoted as Professors


Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is well enriched with the knowledge and expertise of newly promoted scholarly professors; Professor Tushara Chaminda and Professor K.S. Wanniarachchi. They are praised for their enormous efforts on sharpening skills of future generation and continuous research for the development of the sciences related to the faculty, university and further to the country over the years of excellent service.

Along with Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is also humbly celebrated its first professorship appointment of Professor H.C.P. Karunasena. He is also an energetic young experienced scholar who continuously engage in industrial projects, research, student capacity building, and knowledge sharing for the betterment of science.

Team “Aromatic” Leading the Way


Team “Aromatic”, a group of talented first year undergraduates of Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna have successfully witnessed continuous victories in recent times. Amongst the numerous achievements, becoming the Semifinalists from “Evolution AI” Ideathon and the 2nd Runners up of “Cyberzee” Hackathon, organized by the University of Kelaniya, and the Most popular team in “Aurora” Hackathon which is organized by Society of Computer Science of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura are significant. Congratulations to the Team “Aromatic”.


Champions of “Evolution AI” (Artificial Intelligence Ideathon)


A group of students from the 22nd Batch, Faculty of Engineering has won the championship of islandwide “Evolution AI”, an Artificial Intelligence Ideathon organized by AIESEC in the University of Kelaniya


Inter-University Debate Competition 2021 - Runners Up


The University of Ruhuna debate team emerged as runners up in the Inter-University Debate Competition 2021, which was organized by IESL YMS. In the final, the UoR team represented the opposition in the topic of “Shifting towards 70% renewable energy power by 2030 is feasible, regardless of the current economic standpoint and framework of Sri Lanka”. Congratulations to the UoR debate team.
