FACILITIES


Sports Facilities-Faculty of Engineering

The students of the Faculty of Engineering take actively take part in sports activities. The students can take part in 21 sports that are facilitated within the university. The faculty premises has a well equipped weight training room, a multipurpose play ground for Athletics Elle, Hockey Rugger, Football, Cricket Road Race, Netball, Base ball , and facilities for Badminton, Table Tennis, Chess, Basketball, Carrom, Karate. At At university level annual sports events such as Inter-Faculty and Inter-University tournaments are held. In addition to these, a two weeks long University Sports Festival named SLUG is held at a selected University once in every 3 years. Students are also encouraged to participate in the World University Sports Festival which is held once in every two years. .


Engineering faculty students are among the best performers in interfaculty tournaments. Many of our best sportsmen and women have shown their talents in many interuniversity level games enabling them to represent the national university teams as well as to take part in world university games. At the end of each year, a Colors Award Ceremony is held and those who excel in different sports activities at tournaments and meets are awarded colours in which many of our sports men and women receive university colours.


Past and present sports enthusiasts of the faculty have formed the Engineering Faculty Sports Club. Together they are working hard for the betterment of the sports in the engineering faculty through the development of sportsmen and women as well as sports infrastructure within the faculty.

Congratulations to Mr. Lakdinu De Silva for Winning IMechE's Speak Out of Engineers Sri Lanka Finals Competition


It was a moment of pride and triumph as Mr. Lakdinu De Silva, an affiliate member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE, UK), representing the IMechE Ruhuna Student Chapter of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ruhuna, emerged victorious in the prestigious Speak Out for Engineers (SofE) Sri Lanka final competition as the champion with winning prize of 300£. Organized by the IMechE Sri Lanka section, the event took place on September 2, 2023, at the Renuka Hotel in Colombo.

Champions of the ‘Glamour Femme 23’ Inter University English Debating Tournament.


“An English Debating Team of the University of Ruhuna comprising of both Engineering and Medical Faculty Students emerged as the champions of the ‘Glamour Femme 23’ Inter University debating tournament organised by the IEEE student chapter of the SLIIT. The team faced two teams from the University of Moratuwa, a team from the University of Jaffna and a team from SLIIT.”

2nd Runners-Up of “MORA UXplore 1.0” All Island UI/UX


Congratulations to team 'Bit_Borg' from Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna for their remarkable achievement in the MORA UXplore 1.0, All Island UI/UX Designathon organized by IEEE Student Branch of University of Moratuwa. Among tough competitors, they secured an impressive 2nd Runners-Up position, showcasing their exceptional talent and creativity in UI/UX design. Their innovative ideas and dedication have brought great pride to their university, making them a shining example of excellence in the field of design.

Best Technical Paper and Winner in IET Young Professionals’ Technical Conference 2023


Vidura Bandara Wijekoon, a final year undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, won the IET Young Professionals’ Technical Conference 2023. His paper, "Critical Assessment of Machine Learning-Based Approaches for Predicting System Inertia in Power Systems," earned him the Best Technical Paper award. Congratulations Vidura, on this well-deserved recognition!

Programme Review 2022


The programme review of the three degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna was completed with all three engineering programmes receiving a high level of accomplishment of quality with high “A” grades.

“Ruhuna Debaters” bring home the championship again with the topic “පාර්ලිමේන්තුව විසුරුවා හැර මහාමැතිවරණයකට යාමෙන් මෙරට දේශපාලන හා ආර්ථික ස්ථාවරභාවය ඇති කළ හැකිය / දේශපාලන හා ආර්ථික අස්ථාවරත්වය තවදුරටත් වැඩිවේ.”


“Ruhuna Debaters”, the University of Ruhuna Sinhala Debate team was able to bring home the championship this December when they beat the University of Jaffna C team at the debate “A new Dawn” inter-university debating competition. The debate was organized by the Department of Sociology & Cultural Center of University of Ruhuna. The preliminary rounds were won against Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, University of Jaffna and University of Kelaniya. Topic for the final debate was “පාර්ලිමේන්තුව විසුරුවා හැර මහාමැතිවරණයකට යාමෙන් මෙරට දේශපාලන හා ආර්ථික ස්ථාවරභාවය ඇති කළ හැකිය / දේශපාලන හා ආර්ථික අස්ථාවරත්වය තවදුරටත් වැඩිවේ.” The team was captained by H. H.Avishka Udara from the Faculty of Management and the other team members were: Chamidu Adithya (Faculty of Engineering), Shamith Jayawardhana (Faculty of Humanities and Social Science) and Danidu Demantha (selected to Faculty of Engineering).


Signing of MOU with Sri Lanka Unites (SLU)


An MoU was signed between University of Ruhuna and Sri Lanka Unites (SLU). This MoU envisions to promote Education on Reconciliation and Leadership to the students of the University for the next five years.

Honorary Invitation Offer for Chaminda Karunasena - Adjunct Professor of QUT


Congratulations to Prof. Chaminda Karunasena, for being appointed as an Honorary Adjunct Professor of QUT in the Faculty of Engineering, School of Mechanical, Medical & Process Engineering for a 2-year period. This award is in recognition of his excellent research and innovation towards the betterment of Science.

Hope this appointment will become a bridging path for international research between Queensland University of Technology and University of Ruhuna.
