The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies successfully conducted the 25th session of the INSPIRE Webinar Series titled \u201cEngineering Your Own Path to Become an Entrepreneur\u201d on 9th May 2026 via Zoom from 7.00 PM to 8.30 PM. The session provided students with valuable insights into the real world journey of becoming successful entrepreneurial engineers.<\/p>\n

The discussion featured experienced industry professionals, Eng. Nadeera Wijesinghe, Founder\/CEO of Vibhawa Consultants, and Eng. Z. M. Hairu, Chairman of Hairu Group, who shared their personal stories, challenges, failures, achievements, and lessons learned throughout their careers.<\/p>\n

The key points raised were that success does not depend on being on the straight and narrow path academically, but rather by being persistent, learning continuously, adapting, and being resilient when facing obstacles. It was made clear that careers in engineering and entrepreneurship are formed by experience, mistakes, and keeping going despite uncertainty.<\/p>\n

The session highlighted how engineering entrepreneurship uses technical expertise to create innovations and business ventures that add value to society. The speakers advised the students not to chase monetary gains but instead should try to solve the real life problems using engineering skills. They mentioned several examples drawn from their own experience regarding projects in renewable energy, electricity consulting, power generation, and sustainable development projects abroad.<\/p>\n

One important takeaway from the discussion was the difference between just having an entrepreneurial venture and developing a sustainable enterprise. According to the panelists, achieving sustainability entails having a sound system, good procedures, and efficient processes that enable the enterprise to operate on its own without relying on the entrepreneur. Other important elements highlighted included leadership skills, effective communication, negotiating, working as a team, and organizing people and processes.<\/p>\n

Moreover, students were also advised to be well exposed to the industry prior to venturing into entrepreneurial endeavors. It was pointed out that being technically sound, having good problem-solving skills, and being able to learn and adapt through observation are crucial traits for an entrepreneur. The speakers emphasized that entrepreneurship entails constant learning, which goes beyond theoretical understanding. They stressed that being an entrepreneur is not a brief process but rather a long one that demands both mental toughness and physical health.<\/p>\n

On the whole, the event acted as a motivational and educational avenue for the engineering undergraduates to learn about the realities of entrepreneurship. The practical insights and firsthand experience offered by the resource persons inspired the students to go beyond traditional careers and seek avenues where they can make a difference through engineering and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the dedication of the second-year engineering undergraduates of the INSPIRE crew, the webinar ran successfully and left a strong impact.<\/p>\n
