“CAD EAGER 2017” is organized by the young Members Section (YMS) of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) in association with The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna. The Computer Aided 3D Design (CAD) competition will develop solid modeling, team work and presentation skills of undergraduates. The competition was held for the first time as an event in the TECHNO 2013 exhibition. Since then, it is held as an annual competition in the IESL-TECHNO Exhibition with enthusiastic participation of Engineering Students.

he competition is open for any IESL Student member in the country. The competitors must be registered for the competition on or before 22nd September 2017 through the registration web link. Once they are registered they will receive a registration number via email. The competition will be held in two stages,

Stage 1: In the first stage, a predefined solid modeling task is provided and the project files must be uploaded to the cloud location and up loading path, date and time will be informed by email.

Stage 2: The final competition will be started at 08.30 am on the 14th of October 2017 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, BMICH, Colombo.

Rules and Regulations

  • Only licensed software and free software are allowed to be used in the competition. Competitors of the first stage of the competition must provide proof for the appropriate software licensing at the final stage of the competition.
  • A team should comprise of maximum of 2 competitors. Individuals also can apply.
  • Sample Task
  • Judges have the right to reject a submission, if they believe it does not agree with the competition theme.
  • Competitors should send a scanned copy or a photo of their student ID card and the IESL membership card along with the application. The mail address will be given after registration to send the scanned ID copy.

Sample Task

Tree Branch Pruning Scissor
  • Scissor body Material: Steel
  • Handle coating material: PVC dipped
  • Max diameter of tree branch: 20mm
  • Approximate overall length: 250mm

Designer should be able to design the model in proper scale. The maximum force applied on the handles is assumed as 50N.

The Competitor should submit the following output files
  • Part files
  • Assembly file
  • Exploded view
  • Simulation video
  • Stress analysis report
